Asiatic Black Bears - General Facts

The Asiatic Black Bears belong to the group of mammals that are distinguished by a large, stocky body, powerful limbs and short stumpy tail. The Asiatic Black Bear is also referred to the Himalayan Black Bear or the Tibetan Black Bear. The Bear species includes 7 or 8 subspecies that are: a giant Panda, Spectacled Bear, Sun Bear, Sloth Bear, Asiatic Black Bear, American Black Bear, Brown Bear, and Polar Bear.

The range of the Bear species habitat is rather large; they live both in the mountains, forests, and Arctic wilderness. During the last century the population of these animals has decreased greatly. The Asiatic Black Bears are very good swimmers. Among the enemies of the Asiatic Black Bear apart from humans are tigers, brown Bears, and wolves.

The Asiatic Black Bears hibernate in the northern parts of their range; thus, they sleep during the whole cold period. It builds up a large body fat store and it stays in hibernation from late November and does not leave its den until late March or early April. The heart beat of the Asiatic Black Bear during the hibernation period drops to 8-12 beats per minute compared to 40-70 per minute in other Bears. By the end of the hibernation period, males loose up to 15%-30% of their total weight, while females loose up to 40%.


Social Organization: Little is known about the Asiatic Black Bear in the wild. They are mainly nocturnal sleeping in caves or trees during the greater part of the day. They prefer to be far from humans although nowadays as the territory of the animals lessen, it is very difficult to distance their selves. The Bears may have territories at their disposal of about 4 to 8 square miles.


Social System: There is few information available on social organization of the Asiatic Black Bears. They are reported to be mainly nocturnal sleeping in trees or caves during the day. In Russia, their home range is reported to be 10 to 20 square kilometers (4 to 8 square miles).


Economic Importance for Humans -- Negative: Asiatic Black Bears are a pest to farmers because they eat livestock and crops.


Economic Importance for Humans -- Positive: The Asiatic Black Bears are hunted for sport and for their body parts, especially gall bladders, which are used as folk medicine.

Asiatic Black Bears - Conclusion

Thus the Asiatic Black Bears are solitary and nocturnal animals. They spend the most of their day sleeping while they feed in the night and evening. The home range of Asiatic Black Bears depends on the amount of food they can get, but it is usually not less than half a square mile.
